What average draft position means
Average draft position takes every recorded selection of a player and averages the pick numbers. If a tight end is taken with picks 28, 31, and 37 across three drafts, his average draft position is 32.0 — roughly a late third round pick in a 12-team league.
Because it is an average, ADP hides variance. A player with an ADP of 32 might go as early as pick 20 in an aggressive room. That is why draft-range awareness matters as much as the average itself.
Average draft position vs draft round
Divide ADP by your league size to convert it to a round. In a 12-team league, an average draft position of 32 lands in round three; in a 10-team league the same number is round four. Always translate ADP into your own league's round structure before you build a draft plan.
Positional runs distort this. When three quarterbacks go in ten picks, every remaining quarterback's effective cost jumps well past his listed average draft position.
